Immigration updates

The recent AEWV changes for ANZSCO Level 4 & 5 (Low Skilled) roles has created a lot of confusion especially around a candidate’s Maximum Continuous Stay (MCS).

If your role is deemed low skilled and your visa was approved between 21.6.23 and 7.4.24, you remain eligible for 5 years before the one year stand down applies.

All ANZSCO Levels 1,2 & 3 (Mid Skilled and High Skilled) roles on AEWV’s remain eligible for the 5-year MCS.

Candidates on Low skilled roles can also apply for a Job Change / VOC and still retain their original rights, if their initial visa was approved between 21.6.23 and 7.4.24.

Current AEWV holders have got a three-year term with the right to apply for another two years. This is in effect a new visa application, and therefore the AEWV INZ application fee of $750 unfortunately applies .

There is no advantage in applying early for an extension. All applications will be queued until 9 months before the visa’s expiry. This will then trigger the processing of the re application.

The NZ economy has slowed significantly and as such INZ will no doubt see a corresponding reduction in application numbers. This is good for new applicants as INZ’s processing times should speed up after recent significant slowing of processing times due to the AEWV changes announced on 7th April, 2024.

Active Investor Plus Visa - AI+ 2.0 The New Zealand Government announced changes to NZ’s Active Investor Plus Category on 9.2.25. This signals to the international investment market that NZ is open for business. These changes from 1st April 2025 will ensure those who engage with investors will extract potentially greater investment on a far greater scale than is currently being achieved. This will finally deliver the economic benefits that the policy was designed to create. Over the past two years, we have seen a significant number of potential investors discouraged by the investor visa route into New Zealand. These changes to the AI+ settings are a refinement that removes any unnecessary complexity and rewards high-wealth individuals who wish to invest in NZ. The current settings have been unable to achieve the projected interest, and as such, increased interest and investment into NZ is highly likely.
