INZ Update - April 2025

Steve Baker • April 1, 2025

Everything you need to know.

From 8 April 2025, Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) applicants can receive Interim Visas that allow them to work in New Zealand, if their visa expires while INZ is assessing their application.

To be eligible, the applicant must hold either a work visa or a student visa that allows them to work during term time, have applied for an AEWV and receive their Interim Visa on or after 8 April 2025. The Interim Visa will allow them to work for the accredited employer and the job specified in their AEWV application, enabling them to move into their job more quickly.  Interim Visas are usually granted automatically to eligible customers. If you receive an Interim Visa for a client, you should check their visa letter to know whether they can work.

Candidates can provide this letter to their employer, as Interim Visa conditions are not shown in VisaView.

If the applicant intends to apply for a Work to Residence Visa, time spent working on the Interim Visa can count towards their New Zealand work experience requirements. If the applicant was on an AEWV, the time spent on an Interim Visa with these conditions will count towards the maximum time they can stay in New Zealand on an AEWV. If they hold a different visa, their maximum time will start from when their AEWV is approved.

Active Investor Plus Visa - AI+ 2.0 The New Zealand Government announced changes to NZ’s Active Investor Plus Category on 9.2.25. This signals to the international investment market that NZ is open for business. These changes from 1st April 2025 will ensure those who engage with investors will extract potentially greater investment on a far greater scale than is currently being achieved. This will finally deliver the economic benefits that the policy was designed to create. Over the past two years, we have seen a significant number of potential investors discouraged by the investor visa route into New Zealand. These changes to the AI+ settings are a refinement that removes any unnecessary complexity and rewards high-wealth individuals who wish to invest in NZ. The current settings have been unable to achieve the projected interest, and as such, increased interest and investment into NZ is highly likely.
